Firming Without Needles or Numbing Cream: What a Radiofrequency Session Feels Like
Does facial radiofrequency hurt? What the XERF manufacturer says about comfort, what is particular about heat, and what we tell you up front.
How long XERF radiofrequency results last: what the clinic and the Cleveland Clinic say, and how the yearly upkeep session helps keep the result.

According to the clinic, XERF results can last 12 to 24 months after a full series, and they vary from one person to another. Skin aging, however, carries on after the treatment as it did before, which is why we plan one upkeep session per year.
This article goes over what the sources say about how long it lasts, why none of them can give you a date, and what "upkeep" actually means here.
Two sources give a duration. They are not identical, and that is normal: they do not describe the same device or the same people.
| Source | Stated duration | What it adds |
|---|---|---|
| Clinique DC (XERF) | 12 to 24 months after a full series | Results vary from person to person |
| Cleveland Clinic (radiofrequency in general) | One to three years | "With proper skin care"; changes settle in over two to six months |
The two ranges overlap without being the same. The Cleveland Clinic talks about radiofrequency in general. The clinic's figure comes from our experience with XERF, and we do not present it as a promise.
With us, duration varies with your age, how much laxity you start with, and your lifestyle.
The Cleveland Clinic adds a useful point: the treatment works best in people who are just starting to show signs of aging, and less well on very sagging skin. So the same device does not give two faces the same duration.

One question keeps coming back: does the face go back to how it was? Not in that way. This is not a product that dissolves: your skin has changed, and it keeps aging afterwards.
What we don't know is the pace in your case. We found no source that measures this return over several years for XERF. The systematic review by Austin et al. (Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 2022) reports improved laxity and elasticity in facial and neck skin with radiofrequency, but it is not a duration study.
Here is how it unfolds with us:
We don't restart the whole protocol every year: upkeep is there to hold what was gained. There is no obligation, it is a choice you make or not. For the detailed schedule, this article counts the sessions.

As for budget, the price of upkeep is confirmed at the assessment. A XERF session is $1,500, taxes extra, and it is the same amount everywhere: the manufacturer sets a price floor.
According to the clinic, XERF results can last 12 to 24 months after a full series, and they vary from one person to another.
On very slack skin, the effect will be more modest. No radiofrequency lifts tissue that has dropped or removes excess skin: only surgery does.
What we won't do: promise you 24 months, or sell upkeep as an obligation. If the assessment shows XERF is not the right answer, we tell you. Facial sagging describes what is going on in these areas too.
Not all at once, and not exactly. Your skin has changed, but it keeps aging. How fast in your case, we can't say precisely.
With us, one upkeep session a year is planned after the initial protocol. It is a choice, not an obligation: we talk it through at the assessment.
The right timing is set at the assessment, based on your age, your skin and what you see in the mirror. We don't give a fixed schedule in advance.
The effect builds gradually. The Cleveland Clinic mentions two to six months for radiofrequency in general, and our treatment page three to six months for XERF.

Does facial radiofrequency hurt? What the XERF manufacturer says about comfort, what is particular about heat, and what we tell you up front.

XERF radiofrequency firms without injecting anything: no muscle blocked, no volume added. What changes on your face, and what stays exactly as it is.

Too early, too late or right on time: how to tell whether facial radiofrequency suits you, and when only surgery answers.
The best plan starts with an assessment. We look at your skin and answer your questions, no obligation.
